DJ Marky Podcasts Vol. 01-04

DJ MarkyRegarded as a drum’n’bass innovator under the name Marky Mark and then just DJ Marky, he was discovered by English DJ Bryan Gee, who saw Marky playing in a club in São Paulo in 1998. Amazed by Marky’s scratch skills, he invited the DJ to play in London. Marky got started in drum’n’bass in 1992, choosing a more hardcore edge, but the small audiences nearly caused him to give up. At the time, he was told that that kind of music was for only a few. In 1997, he went to London and met DJs Hype and Goldie. The meeting with Brian G was definitive for Marky’s conquering of England. In 1999, he was awarded "Best New DJ" by the British critics. The recording sessions of his album "Working the Mix" happened in his house, with two pick ups, one mixer and vinyl albums. When it was ready, he showed it to moguls at Paradoxx and got lucky. Having taken over Brazil and England, Marky has been praised for his sound articulation abilities, with elaborate mixings that connect one song to the next with amazing accuracy and also for the careful choice and combination of the repertoire. Here are first 4 installments of his podcast. Quality stuff! Enjoy!

Total Science & MC Stamina - Live @ DNBArena 10th BDay Party [17-11-2006]

ListenThe pair first met in 1987, both living on Blackbird Leys estate in Oxford, England and brought together through a mutual love of hip-hop. Distracted by the arrival of hardcore in the early nineties, record collecting was quickly followed by DJ'ing and eventually production. Greenhalgh was the first into the studio, with "Freestyle Fanatic" launching his career in 1991. However it was the establishment of the Legend imprint and specifically Greenhalgh's "Champion Sound", which really took their profile above and beyond the slew of anonymous white labels that were dominating the music at the time. In 1994, the pair started recording together, with "Got to Believe" the first in a series of records which pushed the label away from the fizzling darkside movement and more towards the epic string sections and rolling beats which started to appear on labels like Lucky Spin, Basement and Good Looking. After six years of recording singles for others, the pair established the CIA label in the closing months of 1997 with the help of Brillo from Timeless. The release of their Silent Reign EP for Goldie's Metalheadz breathed a new lease of life into the project, and the pair achieved a further boost with a well-timed Bad Company remix of "Champion Sound" which conjured further interest in what they were doing at their own label. Their debut album Advance exposed a further field of interest, with downtempo experiments logged as a series of "Breaks" on the majority of their early EP's extended to some superb deep house, this breadth taken a step further with their Skin Deep imprint which has forged broken beat to considerable acclaim. Their pioneering of a revival in old-school sounds and arrangements, together with Digital and Reinforced, dominated drum & bass throughout 2001.Total Science and MC Stamina live on DNB Arena 10th Birthday Marathon Party.

DJ Hype - Live @ KiSS100 [13-12-2006]

Although his Ganja Records label and tracks released under his own name and with the Ganja Kru have helped, it's the 'DJ' at the front of Hype's name that has proved most important in raising his profile to the level of the Grooverider's, Goldie's, and LTJ Bukem's of Drum'n'Bass. A battle DJ of renown (he represented England in the 1989 DMCs), Hype had a history of electrifying deckwork before moving on from his reggae and hip-hop roots in the late '80s and latching onto house and hardcore. He was an early force on one of London's most influential pirate stations, Fantasy FM, and since then he's consistently topped bills on the international DJ circuit, landing awards for Best Male DJ and Best Radio DJ (in 1994 and 1995, respectively) at the U.K.'s prestigious Hardcore Awards. He's also one of London's popular Kiss FM's biggest attractions and was the force behind Suburban Base's popular multi-volumed mixed compilation series, Drum and Bass Selection. A champion of jungle's dancefloor purity, Hype has also rallied consistently against jungle's compartmentalization into artificial "scenes" such as ambient/intelligent and hip-hop/ragga. (Of course, his sets tend to consist almost exclusively of the latter, which somewhat undermines his argument.)

D-BRIDGE - LIVE @DNBArena 10Th BDay Party [17-11-2006]

D-BRIDGED-Bridge, one quarter of the famous Bad Company, is the highly ranked producer. Fabio praised his sets whenever he heard him. Here is a little info on his label. Exit Records is the fruition of a lifetime goal for D-Bridge. Exit came about as a result of Darrens desire to be able to express his own individual qualities as a producer, rather than being a contributor to a greater whole. Embarking on a solo effort seems like a natural progression for Darren, who through the success of Bad Company UK, Spacek and more recently with Istickz has managed to create a diverse and inspirational release catalogue of enviable proportions. Along with further releases planned on Exit in the later part of 2005, there are also several solo efforts out on high-profile labels including Liquid V "China Blue/True To The Craft/Better Dayz", Soul:r "Without Answers/Loves Ugly Child", Creative Source "Something To Hide/Belief, Bingo Beats "The Monochrome EP" and Metalheadz "True Romance/Bellini" Read the full post for the tracklisting of his set for DRUM'N'BASS ARENA 10th BIRTHDAY Party.

Bryan Gee @ Movement (Broadway - São Paulo/SP) [14-11-2006]

BRYANNGoing through Bryan Gees life story is like opening the bible of dance music. Bryan has been at the cutting edge of new musics and a crucial link in the logical evolution of the sound, that has now led to drum and bass: no one better than him can explain that this sound is the result of a long and very natural progression, and is deeply rooted. Born in Gloucester, DJing at Reggae sound systems from the age of 13, Bryan moved to London at 18. Settling in Brixton, Bryan started listening to all kinds of music; jazz, soul, funk, rare groove and hip-hop which reached the UK in the mid-eighties.
But the major element in the equation had to be the emergence of acid house in 1987, that Bryan followed, going to Spectrum and The Beat Route. His friendship with Jumping Jack Frost, met while DJing, blossomed. They both set up Passion, a pirate radio station in Balham and acquired quickly a huge following. Highly respected by cutting edge record labels and artists, he always managed to get high profile guests like Frankie Bones and Louie Vega, and was one of the first British DJ to play French Kiss on air. Bryans daytime jobs at Republic and Rhythm Kings subsidiary Outta Rhythm, where he was promoting Warps LFO, Leftfield, Baby Ford, Dave Angel, Joey Beltram and Moby (one of his tips for the top by then !) earning Bryan respect across the board.
Around the time Rhythm King disintegrated, Bryan came across a demo tape and loved its combination of soulful, reggae vibe and sharp breakbeats. Bryan went to Bristol and met the people behind the tape; two guys called Roni Size and DJ Krust. Dismissed by the A&R people he approached who did not believe in this new, explosive sound, Bryan set up V Recordings (www.vrecordings.com) with Frost and released the tracks on the tape. It sold very little but the units increased quickly and steadily. Bryan found a great opportunity to showcase his new releases in London with weekly club Movement at Bar Rumba on Thursdays, started with Emotif Records and promoters Bulldozer. The club nights have proven to be the most versatile drum and bass showcase in London (www.movement.co.uk) With constant touring as well as mixing an album retracing 3 years of Movement residency, Bryan Gee is kept busy and happy. Bryan has now also taken command of the airwaves with the biggest show on Ministry of Sound radio, attracting a worldwide audience.

Moving Fusion - Live on Pyrotechnic Radio [07-12-2006]

MOVING FUSIONMoving Fusion exploded onto the scene in 1998 with the dance floor smashing heavy weight anthem Turbulence on Ram Records which went on to receive MixMags coveted Tune of the Year award. Ever since, Moving Fusion have been a permanent fixture of the Ram Records family and at the cutting edge of dance music production. The outfit have also enjoyed touring the world on a regular basis, mixing up the music that they love. Their debut artist album The Start Of Something confirmed them as a drum and bass outfit of epic proportions. Turbulence changed everything for Moving Fusion, all the DJs played it and everyone bought it! The only problem was that the guys had put everything they had into making that tune, every trick in their book, so following it was a daunting task to say the least. So it was a case of going back to the drawing board, or sampler as the case may be. Read more for download location...

Although there was a brief gap it was less than 12 months before the guys had their next release lined up on Ram, they were to have their own EP which included The Beginning, Brain Storm, Combat and Sex Drive. Many of which are still included in many a DJ set today, seven years on Its important to note that unlike a lot of producers until this time the guys were so focused on their productions that they hadnt thought about becoming DJs as well. However, after playing the small room at Rams very own night at Londons prestigious End club, they were hooked. They just absolutely loved the buzz of playing their own music, whilst also playing whatever else they felt was great in drum and bass at that time. After that like anything else they set their minds too the guys worked hard at their mixing until the day came that they let Rams label manager Scott Bourne know they were ready, at which point the bookings began rolling in. To their surprise bookings werent just for around the UK either, one of their first bookings was for a two week tour of Australia! Thats what happens when you make great music! Now moving, into 2006, Moving Fusion, aka Jeff Langton, will be raising the bar with a lot of exciting projects in the pipeline..so expect to see him DJing all over the world.
This is Moving Fusion mix on Pyrotechnic Radio.

Beta 2 & Zero Tolerance @ 1Xtra Mixshow 13/11/2006

Beta2 (Dominic Purcell) Around 1989 Dominic started experimenting with keyboards and record decks which soon progressed to an interest in DJing.Introduced into Hardcore/Rave in the early nineties by a friends brother,he began to collect records, and about a year later, got his own set of decks which led to his love of Drum and Bass.He really liked the music around at the time, got interested in producing, bought some equipment and has been making music ever since....

Zero Tolerance's (aka Cian McCann) began releasing music in the year 2000 with his home town label Bassbin and Jungle originators Reinforced Records as part of their 2nd Wave Project (which also gave debut's to Sonic and Silver, Breakage and Beta 2 amongst others). To date his productions have already been released on such major labels as Liquid V, Signature, Hospital, Commercial Suicide, CIA and Subtitles amongst others (and of course....Reinforced and Bassbin).
